Vivid.
Layered.
Considered.
Colour tattooing is the most technically demanding style — pigment must be saturated, blended, and layered with precision. From soft watercolour washes to bold neo-traditional palettes, every piece is built to stay vivid for years.
The discipline
Colour that earns its place.
Colour fades. That is not a flaw — it is a reason to apply it with more care, not less.
Colour is not decoration — it is information. A well-placed wash of colour can suggest light, depth, or mood in a way that black and grey cannot. But colour also demands more of the skin, the artist, and the aftercare process. Pigment must be packed evenly, layered thoughtfully, and chosen with the healed result in mind — not just the fresh one.
Shawn approaches coloured work with the same restraint applied to every style at INKzen. Colour is used where it serves the piece — never for its own sake. Whether it's a single accent colour in an otherwise black composition, or a fully saturated illustrative piece, the palette is chosen in consultation and designed to age with integrity.

Questions
Common
questions.
Colour work often requires more passes over the same area to achieve saturation, which can feel more intense in longer sessions. The experience varies by placement and individual tolerance. Sessions are planned with your comfort in mind.
Sun protection is the single most important factor. Apply SPF 50+ to healed tattoos whenever they're exposed. Keep skin moisturised. Avoid prolonged soaking in water. These habits significantly extend the vibrancy of coloured work.
Yes — pigment interacts differently with different skin tones. Some colours are more visible on deeper skin tones than others. Shawn will advise honestly on which palette choices will achieve the intended result on your skin specifically.
In many cases, yes. The feasibility depends on the age, quality, and style of the existing work. Shawn will assess the piece and advise on what additions are possible without compromising the original.
A small to medium coloured piece typically takes one to two sessions. Larger illustrative or neo-traditional compositions are planned across multiple sessions — usually three to five — to build the colour properly and allow the skin to recover between layers.
